Squamish Estuary & Spit
This area is broken into two sections, the Spit and the Estuary, both with very unique attributes for visitors.
The Spit
Jutting out to its exposed tip in Howe Sound, the Squamish Spit is the first point of land struck by the strong summer winds; the perfect recipe for wind sports. Advanced kite boarders and windsurfers flock to the spit from June to September, taking advantage of the consistent winds handy facilites.
Visitors can sit on the rocks nearby and watch boarders come ripping past and taking long, controlled airs flying almost literally over your head. If you have the time to drive to the Spit, its an exciting site to see on any windy summer day.
The Estuary
Boardered by the Spit on the West, the Squamish Estuary stretches across the bay to the backend of downtown Squamish. Providing the best views of the Stawamus Chief from anywhere in Squamish, the Estuary is a great place for an afternoon walk through the trails & boardwalks. Wind your way over streams and through tall reeds, keeping your eye out for herron and other local wildlife.
How to Get Here
Driving from the south, continue along Highway 99, past Downtown Squamish and the Adventure Centre, until you reach Industrial Way. Turn left. You'll reach a T intserection at Queens Way, turn Right. Follow Queens way until it curves hard left and becomes Government Road. Follow it 1 km past the train tracks, to a small turn off and sign on your right for The Spit (gravel road).
You'll reach another T, turn left, follow this gravel road until you reach hiking trailhead signs on your left for the Estuary. Continue to the end of the road to reach the Spit.
