The Squamish Nation

The Squamish Nation is comprised of Salish peoples who are descendants of the aboriginal peoples who lived in the present day Great Vancouver area, Gibson's landing and Squamish River watershed. Squamish means "Mother of Wind" or "Birthplace of the Winds" in the Coast Salish language.

The Squamish Nation have occupied and governed their territory since beyond recorded history. Total area of Squamish Nation Traditional Territory is 6,732 sq. km. (673,540 hectares). The Band consists of 23 villages. The percentage of Squamish Nation Traditional Territory allotted to the Squamish Nation People is 0.4230%. These parcels of land which make up the Band are scattered from North Vancouver, Gibson's Landing to the area north of Howe Sound.

The Band population is scattered among nine communities. Membership is determined by marriage and birth right. Membership rules are in place. Approximately 1,941 of 3,292 members live on-reserve.
