Stawamus Chief Provincial Park
Towering 600m (almost 2000ft) above Squamish, the Stawamus Chief is Canada's big-wall rock-climbing mecca, attracting keen rock climbers from around the world every summer. Home to hundreds of high-quality multi-pitch crack climbing routes, novice - advanced rock climbers can spend an entire summer exploring the intimidating granite walls, including the The Apron, The Grand Wall, The Squaw and more.
Dating back millions of years, the Chief stands as the 2nd tallest freestanding granite monolith in the world, after the Rock of Gibraltor. Even as a climbing mecca, by far the most foot traffic in the Park is thesteep hike up it's side to any one of its three peaks. Easy access and breathtaking views make it an incomparable hiking objective. Allow 2.5 - 5 hours for the steep 7-10km hike, and come prepared for mixed weather, wind, and jaw-dropping views.
How to Get Here
Impossible to miss, the Stawamus Chief is immediately south of Squamish on the East side of Highway 99. The Park entrance, parking lot, picnick area and provincial campground are located at the base of the Chief, adjacent to the highway. Currently Highway construction is busy in the area, so you might consider starting your hike from Shannon Falls.
