Mountain Biking in SquamishXC, Downhill or Freeride - Squamish has a mountain bike trail for everyone
For mountain biking, it’s widely known that it really doesn’t get much better than British Columbia. With the world famous extreme North Shore and Whistler a stones throw away, Squamish stands out with an unparalleled variety of trails.
Situated in a valley with surrounding mountains there are endless kilometers of mountain biking trails in Squamish for every skill level. From gentle cruises in the estuary and friendly cross country trails in the Alice Lake area, to hairball downhill descents on Diamondhead. No matter your skill level, you will not run out of satisfying single-track in this town.
To over simplify what this town offers, there are four main areas to enjoy. In the south there is Valleycliffe/Crumpit Woods with its hike-a-bike granite playground. Diamond Head’s vehicle access offers trails for the big bike shuttles. Alice Lake is perfect for first timers with its gentle slopes and some technical descents. Then of course there are the valley trails and dykes.
With so many trails covering such a large area, the options are endless and next to impossible to navigate on your own. For the best introduction to the trails you have several options. Map and guide books are available at the Adventure Centre on highway 99. As well, the local bike shops can set you up with last minute supplies and tips on the must hit trails for your skill level.
For the best introduction to the trails, consider becoming a member of the Squamish Off Road Cycling Association (SORCA). SORCA is the local bike club dedicated to the activity they love. Joining the club is a great way to be exposed to the countless trails in the community through their weekly rides, races, and numerous trail maintenance days.
As for trail etiquette, it’s mostly common sense. You are playing in the woods with other animals so be respectful of other users, wildlife and of course the trails themselves.
SORCA also reminds you to be bear aware.
Responsible Riding Tips
- Be Prepared
Know your equipment, your ability, the weather, and the area you are riding and prepare accordingly. A well-planned ride will go smoothly for you and your companions. - Don’t Ride On Closed Trails
Whether it is to protect the environment or for rider safety, a closed trail is off limits for a reason. Riding closed trails is not only illegal; it gives mountain bikers a bad reputation. - Respect the Trail, Wildlife and Environment
Be sensitive to the trail and its surroundings by riding softly and never skidding. Do not litter and never scare animals. - Stay On the Trail
Do not intentionally ride off trail. Riding off trail can damage the ecosystem. Never cut switchbacks. - Ride Slowly On Crowded Trails
Just like a busy highway, when trails are crowded you must move slowly to ensure safety for all trail users. - Pass With Courtesy and Care
Slow down when approaching other trail users and respectfully make others aware you are approaching. Pass with care and be prepared to stop if necessary. - Share the Trail With Other Trail Users
Mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians must share multi-use trails. Remember: mountain bikers should yield to hikers and equestrians. - Don’t Do Unauthorized Trailwork
Unauthorized or illegal trailwork may lead to environmental damage, injury or even potential trail closure. Don’t change a trail just because you don’t like it or can’t ride it. Send us an email if you have a trail issue. - Get Involved
If you want to make a difference in your mountain biking community get involved with SORCA.
