Wind & Kite Surfing
There are precious few spots on the globe where wind, water and land combine to provide flawless conditions for wind surfing and kite boarding. The Squamish Spit at the mouth of the Squamish River is one of those places with warm wind and sunshine.
While surrounding lakes make for good practice areas, those seeking the delicate balance necessary for high performance days need look no further than the Squamish Spit. Recent upgrades have made this secret spot accessible to all with much needed renovations to the parking and launch area.
Key points to remember when entering this playground: dress warm. The Squamish River is primarily snowmelt so wet or dry suits are a must. Of course, like any outdoor activity, check the forecast before you head out. To catch the perfect day it should be cooler in Vancouver than Squamish and cooler in Squamish than Whistler. If it’s clear in Squamish and Whistler chances are it will be an epic day.
The Squamish Windsports society is the local club dedicated to the spit. Like most local clubs they operate on a very limited budget considering their services. They’re involved in providing access to prime launch areas, rigging area for felt mats, toilets & change room, retrieval Sea Doo services, orientation, assistance and first aid from on-duty staff. Not to mention the most important these days, they cover the liability insurance.
What makes windsports and the spit so great is that even those that can’t do, can easily watch. From a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop, anyone can easily watch remarkable athletes playing every summer day.

Response from Tourism Squamish
Kiteboarding season is mainly from April - late September. There is wind year-round however when the weather starts to cool off most kiteboarders take a break until spring.
Check out Squamish Kiteboarding School and Sea to Sky Kiteboarding for information on lessons.
new to Kiteboarding
I Want to try Kiteboarding in Squamish, i am wondering if you can rent a board for the day or if there is someone who gives lessons?? can you only go at certain times of the year??
The Spit is super!
I have been kiting for 14 years and have travelled to over 22 international kiting spots and Squamish ranks up there with the top three. I can't say enough about this super spot. Say Hi to Colin!
The Spit is Where It's At
There's few kite spots I've seen that are as inspiring as the spit. A small, core group of kiters and wind surfers, gear stacked along the side of the spit, surrounded by incredible mountain views. Gotta love it. The wind is like clockwork too!
